James Yee spoke passionately about his experience of being a Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay detention camp where he worked to address the religious needs of the U.S. military staff and over 600 prisoners. He shared with the audience his observations about what he characterized as inappropriate and unacceptable use of religion as a weapon against the Muslim detainees. Yee called for more education and training so that Americans—both soldiers and civilians—will understand the basic tenets of Islam as a non-violent religion.

He also briefly retold his own story of being unjustly arrested and held in solitary confinement for 76 days in 2003. He was accused of spying, espionage and aiding prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp but was subsequently exonerated of all charges, given an honorable discharge and commended for his service. The newfound molecules bring the total number of biologically-relevant molecules found in interstellar space to 141. Scientists have previously found benzene, a ring-shaped carbon molecule important for life on Earth, around stars and intact amino acids in meteorites that have crash-landed on Earth.

Even more complex molecular creations might be possible in space, experiments suggest. In one study, scientists simulated deep space conditions in the laboratory and created small structures resembling cell walls in living organisms.

Certain PAHs chemical varieties also contain oxygen and nitrogen. Some scientists believe that these PAHs variants exist in interstellar space as well. They are of interest to astrobiologists because these kinds of compounds play important roles in terrestrial biochemistry, according to Sandford.

"Our studies of the comet dust show that the organics are very rich in oxygen and nitrogen," Sandford said. "The data are not incompatible with some of it being in the PAHs, but we still have a lot to learn in this area."

Although some of the other organics captured by the Stardust spacecraft look somewhat similar to the fairly stable organics found in meteorites, Sandford noted that many of the organic compounds appear to be very volatile. One sample even showed an abundance of material containing alcohols.

 

A case for extraterrestrial life

Taken together, the findings suggest that the chemical ingredients necessary for life began taking shape long before our planet was formed.

The red in the picture above is where the biologically-relevant molecules are found on Andromeda (M31).  Life can exist anywhere, and they have alcohol.  I wonder if its just beer or if they have tequila there too?

I'M CALLING BULLSHIT

AmericaBlog has a new post up today called: Pope now says Vatican doesn't "impose nothing on anyone". What a load of crap.

I think it is important to remember that Christianity was a tiny belief before Constantine based his military campaigns as Caesar against the "barbarians" (people who didn't speak Latin) of Europe. This guy - who many considered a tyrant, reviewed all of the religions and propped up Catholicism as the source of his power and success in war. See he really wanted to slaughter his enemies. The Gods of previous Caesar's and Pharaohs had proved inept, eventually allowing defeat in battle. He needed a new one that would give him the power of invincibility. Several mono-theist beliefs became modern day Catholicism. Earlier celebrations of the seasons were re-interpreted by Popes and Caesars to keep the masses happy. Saturnalia became Christmas Lupercalia became Valentines day and Floralia became Easter. The transformation gave us Memorial and Veterans day.

War kills people in case anyone is confused by that. Killing people is wrong and I don't need a stone tablet to fall out of the sky to explain that to me. It's obvious.

Similarly, the ancient books were chosen based on their political positions for inclusion in both the Old and New Testament. That was a tall order as the killing went on through out Constantine's world.

The entire structure of hell and evil are not included for spiritual enlightenment but rather to frighten and enslave the masses in support of those in power. The original word of Jesus and his intent were certainly not followed in the building of huge Cathedrals around the world. This article speaks of the family created in the commerce of life, yet ignores the massive trading, money changers, and mindless indentures required to build the glorification of the Vatican and the power it wielded.

I'm surprised frankly that the threat of eternal damnation continues to work. It is as if our philosophical evolution, our scientific revelations, nor the history of hell on Earth caused by war never happened.

I'm not saying Jesus did not exist. I'm not saying there isn't good that can come of his influence. I'm not saying there is no reason to study or admire or participate in loving each other however that may happen. I don't mean to offend people of faith. I understand that when you "believe", evidence and logic means nothing to you. But just as you receive the respect of atheists, respect those who see cause and effect and reject your faith. War is wrong and killing people is immoral. Loving people is good and healthy.

This post is about the hypocrisy of the Pope's line: "You know well that the church wishes to impose nothing on anyone, and that she merely asks to live in freedom,".

If only it were true.

14-16 billion years later energy continues to change states.

Solar energy is created deep within the core of the Sun. It is here that the Temperature (15,000,000° C; 27,000,000° F) and pressure (340 billion times Earth's air pressure at sea level) is so intense that nuclear reactions take place. This reaction causes four protons or hydrogen nuclei to fuse together to form one alpha particle or helium nucleus. The alpha particle is about .7 percent less massive than the four protons. The difference in mass is expelled as energy and is carried to the surface of the Sun, through a process known as convection, where it is released as light and heat. Energy generated in the Sun's core takes a million years to reach its surface. Every second 700 million tons of hydrogen are converted into helium ashes. Every other element is also created this way. In the process 5 million tons of pure energy is released; therefore, as time goes on the Sun is becoming lighter.

All elements on Earth come from this type of solar sacrifice. Dust, water, carbon, protein, your heart, blood and your mind, as well as mine come from this. Our Sun will be here for five billion more years before Earth itself is also sacrificed with it. That's a long time. Let's enjoy it in PEACE!
